Clinics and Consultation

Picture

We've been lucky to be able to spend over two decades with llamas--training, packing, hiking, as well as caring for them, watching them, and just being around them. More recently we have been working with alpacas, too, learning about their similarities and differences. We thoroughly enjoy passing on what we've learned to others. In fact, it is our joy and pleasure to do what we can to help people make the most of their relationships with these fabulous animals.

We're happy to tailor a clinic focused on just about any aspect of llama and alpaca training, handling, maintenance, and care. If you want a more one-on-one approach or need help when a clinic can't be scheduled, an individual consultation may be appropriate. Contact us with your needs, circumstances, and ideas and we'll do our best to accommodate you. (Please note that we do not have expertise in fiber arts or driving to cart.)

Popular Clinic Options

  • Connecting with Your Llamas or Alpacas. This clinic focuses on basic training and handling so you can catch, halter, lead, trailer, etc., as well as work with them to meet their care and maintenance needs easily, safely, and with minimal stress on you and the animal.
  • Pack Llama Training. We provide effective, humane, and respectful training techniques to ensure your pack llamas reliably and competently do their  part in the backcountry.
  • How to Pack with Llamas. The above clinic is about training the animals; this one is about how to do your part. It includes equipment needs/options; planning and preparing for a trip; packing and loading gear; transporting llamas; anticipating and dealing with the unexpected; and ensuring that your llamas live up to their great potential for having minimal impact on the land.
  • Camelids 101. This clinic provides a broad, educational and practical overview of llamas and alpacas (two members of the camelid genus). Where did they originate? What role did they play in Pre-Columbian South America? What are their uses? What are these two species like--what do they care about and how do they learn? What do they eat? Fencing and housing needs? Routine care and maintenance? Breeding and babies? This is a good option for school and other groups, as well as new owners or people who are considering acquiring camelids.
  • Shearing and Toenails. Please see the discussion on these clinics under the Shearing Services & Clinics tab.

We can host clinics here, using our llamas to demo practices and techniques, or we'll come to you and work with your animals, as well as those of your friends, family, group, etc.
All clinics are scheduled by appointment, weather permitting. They last for three to four hours, generally the latter. $30/person (except Shearing and Toenails Clinics). A minimum of four participants is required to hold a clinic. Travel up to 20 miles within the Rogue Valley, no charge; $0.40/mile one way beyond that. Pricing for clinics in more distant locations may include additional charges to account for travel time.
